From Suet to Skincare: Why We Render Our Own Tallow
When you pick up a container of our skincare, you see the finished product. But an important part of our work happens long before that container is filled.
At Wildly Good, we start with beef suet—not trim—and do all of our rendering ourselves. We don’t buy ready-made tallow to use in our formulas.
These are two choices we want you to know about, because they’re part of how we make our products.
We start with suet. Exclusively.
The starting material matters to us. We use only beef suet for our tallow, rather than a mixture of beef-fat trimmings.
It’s a distinction that might not be obvious when you’re looking at a finished balm, which is why we want to be clear about what we use.
Beef suet is superior for skincare when we're talking animal fats. It's got fatty acids and vitamins that match those in our sebum--the oil our skin produces.
It's also far less greasy and pore-clogging than trim or leaf fat, so it feels incredibly lightweight and nourishing on your skin.
We do the rendering ourselves
Our tallow isn’t delivered to us ready to blend into skincare. We render it ourselves, keeping this step in our own hands rather than handing it off.
Rendering is a labour of love. This time-consuming process is something we are committed to continue keeping in house because it ensure we are making the tallow right by cleaning out everything that isn't fat before doing a single, slow-and-low dry render in the oven. This guarantees neutral smelling tallow with skin-soothing integrity that's been preserved.
Why we’re sharing this
We want you to know more than what’s the product you choose to buy. We want you to know how it got there—and which parts of the process we do ourselves.
This journal is where we’ll share a closer look at that work: our ingredients, our herbal infusions, and the decisions behind our formulas.
And this felt like the right place to begin: exclusively beef suet, rendered entirely by us.
